The iShares Gold Trust (IAU) is a Trust whose purpose is to hold gold transferred to the Trust in exchange for shares issued by the Trust. Each unit represents an undivided interest in the Trust’s net assets. The Trust’s assets consist of gold held by a custodian decided by the Trust. The Trust’s sponsor is iShares Delaware Trust Sponsor LLC, which is an indirect subsidiary of BlackRock. The Trustee of the Trust is the Bank of New York Mellon and the custody of the JPMorgan Chase Bank N.A. London branch. The Trust’s activities are limited and include:
- issuing of baskets of shares in exchange for gold deposited with the official custodian
- the sale of gold to cover the sponsor’s commissions, the Trust’s expenses not assumed by the Sponsor, plus other necessary costs
- delivery of gold in exchange for the Basket of Shares delivered for redemption
The Trust is not actively managed.
